Welcome from the President
Welcome to VASFAA Conference 2019! Your conference committee has assembled an outstanding variety and combination of speakers, session topics, learning opportunities, networking—and fun!
Some years ago, I had the opportunity to hear a Navajo State Senator speak with the group of high school students I had taken to the Navajo Reservation to work with “The People”. He was gracious in welcoming us and thanking us for caring enough to come to Navajo Land, the largest reservation in the country, where those in the middle of the reservation live much as they did 200 years ago. But, at the end of his presentation, he said, “You came, we had a wonderful experience with you, and then you leave—and nothing has changed for my people.” For tribal members with whom we worked closely and for our group, change definitely occurred; on a larger scale, I understood what he meant. Those few words have stayed with me for over 20 years, always reminding me to make the greatest impact possible for the most people possible—to truly make a difference for others.
In reference to the conference, my goal—and the committee’s goal—is that no one leaves VASFAA Conference 2019 without feeling some semblance of growth and better for the experience. Enjoy our few days together! Reach out to me, to a board member, or to a member of the Conference Committee, if we can help in any way. When we leave here on Wednesday, we must continue to “Be the light…and the voice” for students, our schools and our profession in the Commonwealth and the nation!
Any individual who has registered and paid the fees to attend a conference may cancel his/her registration and receive a full refund of the registration fees (not including membership), provided such cancellation is made no less than two weeks before the first day of the conference. Any registration made after that date, is not subject to a refund. Exceptions can be made on a case by case basis at the discretion of the Board.
