We are very sad to announce that the 2020 VASFAA Annual Conference is cancelled. Please see the message below from VASFAA President Brad Scaggs.
What trying times we are experiencing. In a matter of a few weeks, our daily routines have been turned on their ear. When I selected this year’s theme, “Oh the places we’ll go!”, I had no idea just how applicable it would be. The good news is that we are going together, and collectively as financial aid administrators, development partners, government officials, access providers, and trainers we will get through this. Please continue to heed the advice of health officials – practice social distancing and wash your hands frequently.
Given recent developments, including limited travel for many institutions, speakers, and development partners coupled with the advice of NASFAA, the CDC, the president, our governor, and health officials, the Board has made the very difficult decision to cancel our Conference at the Virginia Beach Westin – Town Center. The Conference Committee and I had hoped this would not be necessary; much planning has gone into providing an extraordinary experience for our members. As we gathered information over the last few weeks it became clear that this was the right thing to do for the health and safety of our members, guest speakers, our host city, and the communities in which we live. Nationally, there has been much talk of social distancing as a best practice to “flatten the curve” of infection which allows healthcare workers the opportunity to respond and treat those infected. By canceling the conference, which would have exceeded the number recommended for safe mass gatherings, we are doing our part as an organization.
I would be remiss if I did not thank the many people who have planned for an amazing conference this year. I was extraordinarily excited. To you, I sincerely apologize that your efforts will not be on display at the conference. Thank you Conference Committee. Thank you Development Partners. Thank you Conference Charity Coordinators. Speaking of the charity, Feeding Southwest Virginia, I encourage you to keep them in mind this year if you are able to be philanthropic.
Finally, the business of VASFAA must go on. In the coming weeks you will be notified of our slate of candidates for the 20-21 year. We must elect a President-Elect, Treasurer-Elect, and, due to the recent resignation of a Representative-at-Large to pursue other career opportunities, 3 Representatives-at-Large. You will vote online as you have in the past; an announcement is forthcoming. Additionally, we are required to have an annual business meeting to deliver my final report, the Treasurer’s final report, and announce the results of our elections and awards. We are planning for this meeting to be held electronically. The Board is exploring the options for hosting this event and will notify you via this listserv of the time and mode.
Please stay well and heed all advice of your institutions, health professionals, and local, federal, and state authorities. Let me know if you have questions, or how VASFAA can support you.
