The Conference will kick off Sunday April 29th at 9am with a New Aid Officers Workshop and NASFAA University Credential Training. The Opening Session will begin at 4pm with a welcome from our President, along with other guest and keynote speakers. From there will start Monday morning with our favorite Fed Dave Bartnicki with Department of Education. Please see the tentative agenda here for more details.
The conference will include several celebratory events to include a Dinner cruise on the Spirit of Norfolk to kick off the celebration. This is an event you will not want to miss as we "Come Together"
Welcome from the President
Dear VASFAA Colleagues,
It is my true honor and pleasure to welcome you to VASFAA’s 50th Anniversary Celebration and Conference. I am thrilled about this conference! Co-Conference Chairs Brenda McCafferty, Tarik Boyd and their committee members have put together an excellent training event which boasts speakers representing NASFAA, the Department of Education, SCHEV, Office of the Inspector General, and our very own knowledgeable colleagues along with a worthy charity to support. Not to mention several fun evening events to celebrate our 50th Anniversary!
I would be remiss if I did not provide a special welcome to all of VASFAA’s Past Presidents and members that will be in attendance with us to celebrate this monumental occasion. I started my career in financial aid twenty-five years ago under the leadership of many of these folks who I am proud to call my friends and am especially honored that they are here.
My theme for this year was “Coming Together – Serving Student’s, Families, and Institutions” and we have certainly have come together this year. Your VASFAA Board, Committee Chairs and their committee members have worked tirelessly volunteering their time for the betterment of the students we serve, the institutions for which we work, and this association. Over the last year we have hosted a Directors Summit, provided a fall workshop training event, participated in secondary school relation events, participated in FAFSA Day events across the state, represented VASFAA at sister Association conferences of VCAN and VACROA, and have put together a dynamic training event for you this week.
Under the lead of Wynde Walker we will be raising funds in support of Fisher House as this year’s chosen charity. A Fisher House is “a home away from home” for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers. There are 72 Fisher Houses located on 24 military installations and 29 VA medical centers. Many more houses are under construction or in design and they need our help. This charity is near and dear to many of us. Fisher House helps soldiers and their families cope with all kinds of needs from physical, medical, and mental. I ask that you support this worthy charity in the many different ways and fun events that Wynde and her committee have organized and in honor and support of the soldiers and families in need.
While you are participating in all of the wonderful training sessions, please take time to network with our development partners. These folks have a wide variety of products and tools that are designed to streamline your office processes, help your students, and assist students in achieving their post-secondary educational dreams.
Lastly, I am truly honored and humbled to have served this Association in this capacity. The support that I have received throughout the year from the Board and VASFAA membership has been remarkable. As Vince Lombardi said, “the achievements of an organization are the combined efforts each individual” and I am proud to say that we have “Come Together” and had a successful year! Thank you!
